Have you ever wondered how the healthiness of your mouth can affect your physical wellness? Did you know that when your mouth is unhealthy it can lead to 57 other health risks? .

This can include cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, autoimmune disorders, as well as many other threats to your overall health. One of the biggest markers we can look for is inflammation! Inflammation is our body’s natural reaction to injury and infections. It shows how our body is constantly looking for the source of the infection, and sending cells out to help repair itself. When you go to see your dentist or dental hygienist, it is important to be checked for any signs of inflammation, as too much harmful bacteria can lead to permanent, damaging affects to your oral and systemic health. When there are large amounts of plaque around your teeth, our bodies try to send protective cells to degrade the plaque but in turn make the cell walls weaker, increasing the chance for cell wall rupture. If these cell walls rupture, it can cause sudden heart attacks or even cardiac related death. Here are some reflective questions to think about when assessing your oral health;

A

Do your gums bleed while brushing or flossing?

A

Does your mouth hurt when you are biting or chewing foods?

A

Are there any ‘pockets’ around your teeth, or do they bleed when checked on?

A

When looking at your teeth, do you have any gum recession?

A

Is the space between your teeth increasing in size?

A

Have you had a saliva test to see if you have any harmful bacteria in your mouth?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it is recommended to mention this at your next dental appointment. Long term contributors of these conditions can lead to damaging affects to your overall health. To help keep your mouth healthy, eating a diet largely composed of fruits and vegetables and lean proteins can help limit these health risks. Limiting trans and saturated fats as well high levels of sugar that can cause inflammation and adding Omega and probiotics to your diet will also help to reduce risk. Make sure that you are getting regular check ups by your dental professional, brushing your teeth twice daily, and using a tool for cleaning in between your teeth on a regular basis. Getting regular physical exams with your physician to check for those inflammation markers can help to save your life and keep your body healthy!!
